May 2006 - The Red
Cross Charity Wine Auction
The
8th of May is World Red Cross day every year fundraising celebrations
are held worldwide to highlight the plight of people living
with poverty & illness. One such function was held at Browns
Restaurant in Rivonia.
This gala event took the form of a Charity Auction
of rare wines from world renowned wineries such as Meerlust,
Warwick, Mont du Toit, Klein Constantia & Rustenberg. Of
course, no auction is complete without a personality to ‘bang
the gavel’ and this was Schalk Burger Snr, former springbok
rugby player and owner of Welbedacht Wine Estate. He was an
entertaining auctioneer, regailing the guests with tales of
Rugby & wine. All this excitement got stomachs rumbling
so luckily Browns Executive Chef, Ken Garvey had designed a
gourmet 3 course meal.
The evening was attended by 100 top corporate
executives who bidded enthusiastically for the auction lots.
Mandisa Kalako-Williams, president of the South African Red
Cross Society was there to receive the R 95 000 that Browns
managed to raise. She was overwhelmed by the positive response
and if all goes well, this may be an annual event!
