August 2007 - Browns Hands Over Cheque
for R150 000 to the South African Red Cross
Browns of Rivonia restaurant and wine cellar
proudly handed over a cheque for R150 000 to the president of
the South African Red Cross Society, Mandisa Kalako-Williams,
on Thursday 16 August following a charity wine auction which
took place at Browns earlier this year.

“We are ecstatic and grateful to receive
this cheque for such a substantial amount and hope that it will
go far in assisting our upliftment projects in Gauteng and the
Western Cape” said Kalako-Williams. “It is absolutely
wonderful to have corporates such as Browns supporting us”
she added.
The proceeds stem from a highly successful charity
wine auction hosted at Browns in May where about 100 guests
outbid each other for rare and highly coveted wine lots which
were donated by some of South Africa’s leading wine estates
including Jordan, Klein Constantia, Meerlust, Thelema, Warwick
and Welbedacht.
The charity wine auction was hosted on International
Red Cross Day and included a night of superb food and fine wines
while charismatic former Springbok rugby player Schalk Burger
senior entertained guests with stories of rugby, wine and his
beloved wine estate, Welbedacht.
“Given the aims of the Red Cross and the
plight of many in South Africa, I don’t know of a better
cause to support and it is an absolute pleasure to help contribute
along with Browns to the success of this function” said
Burger.
The Red Cross charity wine auction is an annual
event at Browns and preparations are already underway for next
year’s gala.
