Charity Wine Auction

The Red Cross charity wine auction held at Browns of Rivonia
on Tuesday 8 May proved to be a phenomenal success, raking in
over R150 000 for charity and thrashing last year’s amount
by more than R60 000. The gala event which was held on international
Red Cross day saw organisers and guests alike ‘pleased
as punch’ as Browns of Rivonia proved that charity events
do not have to be sombre affairs.
Browns promised a night of sheer entertainment
– and delivered. Charismatic former Springbok rugby player
Schalk Burger Senior auctioned off a selection of exclusive
and rare wine lots while he warmly recounted stories of rugby,
wine and his beloved wine estate, Welbedacht. The highest fetching
wine lot was a six year vertical selection of Warwick Trilogy
which included a trip for twelve people to the estate for a
private tasting and was attained by a leading financial firm.
President of the South African Red Cross Society,
Mandisa Kalako-Williams was overwhelmed by the generosity of
the 100 guests who attended the event. She stressed that the
money raised and awareness created will go far in furthering
the good work that the Red Cross is able to do. The evening
included a gourmet three course meal, prepared by Browns’
Executive Head Chef Ken Garvey and included an array of drinking
wines supplied by the donating wine farms who are Jordan, Klein
Constantia, Meerlust, Thelema, Warwick and Welbedacht. These
wineries donated exquisite wine lots which fetched high prices
during the bidding.
Marketing Manager at Browns of Rivonia, Lara
Edwards said, “we are ecstatic to have exceeded our target
of R150 000, and would like to thank all donors and participants
for their phenomenal support. This event has become an annual
highlight at Browns and we hope to raise even more next year
for Red Cross projects in Gauteng and the Western Cape winelands.”
