Chenin Blanc Conquers All
By: Charlie Hardie (Cellar Master at Browns
of Rivonia)

Springtime and the eagerly awaited list of 5
star John Platter wines for the 2007 edition are released. All
plaudits this year lie emphatically with Chenin Blanc. I must
admit to my sheer delight that this once former workhouse variety,
known as Steen in the old days, has finally emerged and showing
its undoubted pedigree.
Outside its native home in the Loire Valley,
in Northern France, no other country takes the Chenin Blanc
as seriously as this Republic.
A dedicated group of winemakers have elevated
Chenin to an absolute art form, so much so that in a blind tasting
of 6 Chenin Blancs from around the world I am able to pick out
the South African Chenin with ease. I can not say the same for
Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc.
South African Chenins have a marked aroma of
Honey and almonds with an earthy rich, yet full bodied palette.
Mind you notice had been served of the emergence of Chenin Blanc
with the 2005 Platter wine of the year awarded to Jean Daneel's
Signature 2004.
I also enjoy the versatility of Chenin Blanc.
This years list of Platter Chenins encompasses the dry flinty
style, the Moelleux style and the Noble Late Harvest style.
So embrace the new age of Chenin Blanc and enjoy
the new star in the world of South African wine.
