Winter Comforts
By: Charlie Hardie (Cellar Master at Browns
of Rivonia)

Winter is almost upon us and thoughts now turn
to fireside evenings and how best to enjoy this time after a
sumptuous meal. Several options spring to mind, if you will
forgive the anomaly.
You might consider a Malt Whisky, with its wondrous
autumnal colour, which is my personal tipple. There are different
styles. Those who prefer a softer dram should try one of the
Highland Malts, such as Glenmorangie 10 year old. If your taste
leans towards the stronger flavours, then try the Island Malts,
for instance Laphroaig 10 year old. Healthy, strong peaty smell
and taste are the order of the day with the latter.
Should you decide to stay with a grape based
digestif, then a Cognac or Brandy is the answer. A completely
different experience altogether. Basically it is distilled wine
that has a hint of caramel added for extra taste and lasts forever
on the palate. Imagine all the warmth of summer right there
in your glass. A hedonist’s delight!
