Cape Innovations
By: Charlie Hardie (Cellar Master at Browns
of Rivonia)

One of the advantages of winemaking in the Cape
is that unlike their European counterparts, they can grow what
they like where they like.
Nowhere is this pioneer spirit more admirably
demonstrated than in the wines of Cordoba and Ambeloui.
The former makes a world renowned blended wine
with Cabernet Franc in the vanguard called Crescendo. Merlot
and Cabernet Sauvignon are also used in the wine.
Trial and error reaped a rich dividend, something
that would not be allowed in Europe. The wine is spicy, yet
with a high degree of elegance.
Ambeloui is a tiny specialist Cap Classique
maker. They source their grapes from around the Cape and end
up making the wine in their carport. A bona fide “Garagiste”.
Only the classic grapes of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are used.
The result is a truly individual wine that has serious brioche
notes.
Innovation is alive and kicking in the Cape
wine Industry despite a winemaking history surpassing 300 years.
