Sauvignon Springs into Actions
By: Charlie Hardie (Cellar Master at Browns
of Rivonia)

The 2005 Sauvignon Blanc vintage was eagerly
anticipated as the Cape enjoyed, or not as the case maybe, a
hot dry vintage. Sauvignon Blanc needs a long slow cool ripening
period to maximise the zesty flavours that are their hallmark.
So conditions for the wine farmers were not favourable. A general
rule with regards to Sauvignon, is go for the cooler climate
regions, such as Elgin, Constantia and Hermanus or those wineries
that are at high altitude as they benefit from the cool breezes
that come off from False Bay.
Despite the adverse conditions however, there
are some stunning Sauvignons around. The Constantia farms have
an unfair advantage as their climate is many degrees cooler
than, say Paarl, and their wines collectively are beautiful.
Two new players on the market worth looking out for: The Berrio
from Elim, Cape Agulhas, the most southerly vines in Africa,
is exciting with fresh crisp flavours. Also check out a new
release from Thelema from their Sutherland farm in Elgin.
The perfect place to sample these exciting new
Sauvignon Blancs and a large range of other white & red
wines is Browns of Rivonia, on their decks overlooking the lush
tropical gardens & koi pond. They are also the recent recipients
of an Award of Excellence in the 2005 Diners Club “Winelist
of the Year” awards. With all this and an impressive wine
cellar…
It’s like having the Cape Winelands in
the heart of Johannesburg.
