Champagne – Joie de Vivre!
By: Charlie Hardie (Cellar Master at Browns
of Rivonia)

Mention the word “Champagne” and
the effect on people is instantaneous. A conspiracy of celebration
causes instant adrenalin rush. So, why does Champagne have such
power over us?
Exclusivity is arguably Champagne’s strongest
attraction. In 1968 the Bates Test Case decreed that Champagne
could only be produced in the specific region called Champagne
in North-Eastern France. This means that only a tiny amount is
produced. Even the well known wines, such as Bollinger, Veuve-Clicquot,
Billecart-Salmon are in constant demand and frequently sell
out very fast.
Aspiration is an effective magnet. To taste
a Dom Perignon is highly unique. Known as a Prestige Cuvee,
this is wine that is unsurpassed. Sip on a glass of Laurent-Perrier
Grande Siecle and see the people’s envy.
But where do you go to savour all this decadence?
One suggestion would be to stroll into Brown’s of Rivonia
and indulge yourselves in their new Champagne and Cigar lounge;
the perfect place to relax before or after you tour their magnificent
wine cellars and sample their sumptuous cuisine.
